It’s not all medieval pubs and Robin Hood myths. Nottingham, one of the UK’s most vibrant cities, is a hearty, heady mix of independent stores and vegan-friendly restaurants, thankfully mostly without beard-stroking pretension.
Scratch beneath the surface and you’ll find a tight knit city, full of creatives forging interesting careers out of London, fuelled by locally roasted coffee and a supportive atmosphere for all things artsy.
From the cobbled lanes of Hockley to the up and coming areas like Sherwood, Nottingham has always done its own thing, unswayed by the pull of nearby Sheffield, Manchester and Birmingham.
Unlike many of the other massive cities outside London, Nottingham’s compact size makes it easy to escape for hiking and biking in Sherwood Forest or the Peak District.
Scan the notice boards in any of the coffee shops or co-working spaces in Hockley and you’ll find a city thriving on local networks, whether it’s poetry slams or vegan farmers' markets.
Use the pebble guide to Nottingham to find ethical brands, sustainable restaurants, vegan cafes and eco hotels but also the makers and crafters (and their workshops and wares) that make this city hum with life.
Find awesome beers and spirits at the city’s micro breweries and distilleries and work it all off with a brisk walk or cycle - there are bike paths and parks to explore a plenty.
